On page 212-214, Hucks feelings towards the Jim situation changed for a bit. He felt ashamed that he was helping Jim and he was actually being friends with him just because he is black. He feels like if he helps Jim, that people at home would look down on him and just treat him totally different. Back then the things Huck is doing with Jim was totally against rules or laws. He even wrote a note to Miss Watson telling her exactly where Jim is. He is trying to convince himself that turning Jim in is a good idea and it would benefit him and Jim. When really it would not benefit Jim at all. He would make his life so much worse. Huck keeps thinking that he is going to hell by helping a black man escape slavery. When reading this you have to remember that he is a young boy. When he was growing up he was taught that black people are slaves and that they are not really like a human being. Just like when us kids were growing up, our parents taught us what was right and what was wrong. Huck was taught that helping a slave or being friends with them was wrong. So of course he is going to think he is sinning and going to go to hell for something like that. Then towards the end of his thinking he is realizing that he does not care if he goes to hell for helping Jim. This is what makes me love his character more and more as the book goes on. He just shows that he is willing to go through so much for his friendship and for Jim's life. He knows what will happen to Jim and he feels that their friendship is more important than being ashamed of. "I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world, and the only one he's got now; and then I happened to look around and see that paper" (Twain 214). He is pretty much saying that he was the only thing Jim has and that he is not going to give up on him now.
I am sure a lot of people are confused on why Jim and Huck have not taken advantages to get away from the two frauds and I am surprised the two frauds are even keeping Jim and Huck around. They scam people and do stuff to others all the time. I wonder why they are keeping them around. Plus, they are scared that Jim and Huck will find out that they are frauds, so why not take the risk of them finding out. Even though Huck already knows about them. I personally think Huck has changed a little bit, but not a lot. Like how I talked about in the first paragraph, he was going to turn Jim in and make him go back to his town. Ever since the duke and king came along I feel like Huck has been changing his mind about the situations and everything that is going on. Then suddenly Huck will think hard and harder and realize everything that is going on is wrong and just is not right. It also surprised me to read that Tom was so willingly to help Jim escape. Tom always went by the book and by the rules, so it was surprising to me to see him go against rules of the society and do what was called the "wrong" thing to do.
I like how Huck is willing to consider the fact that he can go to hell for helping a black man escape. Huck just has so much feelings towards others. For example, when the king and the duke got chased by a mob of people Huck felt bad for them. He said, "Human beings can be awful cruel to one another." The king and the Duke have done so much wrong to people and he still has a heart and feels bad for them. I just personally like Huck acts like a adult, more than what teenagers do now. He is a young boy who is traveling without a real adult and is helping a slave escape. He seriously surprises me in each chapter of this book. If i was in the situations he was put in, I have no clue if I could even do it. I would feel like so much pressure was on my shoulders and I feel like I would just break at some point. I could not imagine having to pick between right and wrong and deciding whether I would go to hell or heaven. Plus, could you imagine being Jim in all of this mess. You are pretty much depending on a little kid to keep your life. Even though this book is really confusing to me and I get lost here and there, I really like the characters in this book and how they all think towards everything. I could not imagine living in this time period. I feel like I would be a Huck and help my friend escape, knowing that I would be not welcomed in my town and knowing I could get in so much trouble. It would just be hard knowing that it was up to me if my friend dies or lives.
