While reading these chapters, I started to think about the saying good vs. evil and how I think Mark Twain uses that saying as his theme for these chapters. The Duke and the Dauphin have these greedy habits where they lie, they are manipulative and self-centered. They make me think of todays society and how there are a ton of people in this world who are exactly like those two. It concerns me that the more this goes on, the more people will not pay attention to right vs. wrong. Our world is not a safe place due to these types of behavior. Huck on the other hand makes me believe that there are still people in this world who actually care about doing the right thing, no matter how hard it might be to do it. It is good to see people like Huck because there is not a lot of those people still around and that is why I really enjoy and like Huck's character in this book.
Going on more about the Duke and the Dauphin, they remind me of people who are selfish and only want to do things that benefit themselves. They do not care that there was a family suffering the death of a loved one. To them it was a chance to scam a large amount of money away from people who were very vulnerable at the time. They do not feel guilty about anything they do because they simply do not care about anyone or anything. This is why so many people have a hard time trusting people in this world or society. So many people are so fearful of trusting others, but that is because people give them a reason to be. I think anyone would be scared to trust anyone if people were constantly lying to them and just doing things to get money. Whats sad is that people are actually like that and there are so many greedy people in this world. It is shameful to be part of a world and socialize with these kinds of people. This just proves to us more that our world is not perfect, it is far from it.
When all of this is going on, Huck is actually trying to make things right and make everything better. I love reading about how this young man has enough courage and bravery to try and get the money back to those who it belongs too. I love reading all his thoughts and his point of views on things because it makes me proud to see someone of a young generation try to make things right. Most young boys would just go along with everything and find it exciting. What little boy does not like lying and money? I like how Mark made Huck different and made him have morals. He has a heart and is not a selfish young boy who only cares for himself. He actually cares about others and even Jim. It honestly makes me feel good that there are some people like Huck in this world. If there wasn't it would be a total mess. No one would enjoy living, but people like Huck makes people realize how beautiful our world can be.
I really like how Huck creates really close friendships with people throughout the book. For example, when Huck found jim like towards the beginning he welcomed Jim knowing how society felt about his race. Now he is creating a nice friendship with Mary jane. He is really sympathetic towards people, especially her because she was about to get robbed at her dads funeral. Its sweet how Huck like vents to her and tells her more than what he wanted to tell her. Just reminds how some of the people I am close with now is because you get in deep conversations with someone and you just tell them so much stuff. It just is so interesting how having a conversation with someone can make you think so differently about them and think of them as a best friend. "I've thought of her a many and a million times" (Twain 191). Huck truly cared about Mary jane for who she was, even though they were only together for a short period of times. It shows that you can create a long lasting friendship in a matter of seconds. It is sweet how Huck is such a considerate person and actually can care for others.
